Atomic vapour

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012900

A gaseous phase consisting of individual, neutral atoms of an element, distinct from a molecular gas where atoms are bonded together. An atomic vapour is generated by supplying sufficient thermal energy to a sample to break all chemical bonds and vaporize the resulting free atoms. This process is central to atomic spectroscopy techniques, where the vapour is produced in a flame, graphite furnace, or plasma torch before analysis.
