Atomic absorption spectroscopy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000889
A spectroanalytical procedure for the quantitative determination of chemical elements, based on the absorption of optical radiation by free atoms in the gaseous state. A sample is atomized, and a light beam from a hollow cathode lamp specific to the element passes through the atomic vapor. The decrease in light intensity is proportional to the concentration of the element, typically measured in parts per million or billion.
