Vapour phase interference
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012513
An atomic spectrometry interference arising when the proportion of analyte that is dissociated, ionized or excited in the gas phase changes. Depending on the process affected it is termed a dissociation, ionization or excitation interference. In an air-acetylene flame, for instance, a high concentration of an easily ionized element such as potassium adds electrons and suppresses ionization of the analyte, which raises the free atom signal.
