Atomization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000907
The process of converting a sample from a solid, liquid, or gaseous state into a population of free, ground-state atoms in the gas phase. This is a required step in analytical techniques such as atomic absorption, atomic emission, and atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Atomization is achieved using high-energy sources like flames, electrothermal graphite furnaces, or inductively coupled plasmas, which provide the energy to break chemical bonds and create an atomic vapour.
