1. The number of new cases of a disease that develop within a specified population over a specified period of time.
2. Proportion or probability of individuals or animals exhibiting an effect that varies from zero to one, sometimes expressed as a percent from 0% to 100%.
3. The number of new cases of disease in a defined population over a specific time period.
4. The rate of occurrence of new cases of a disease or condition in a population at risk during a given period of time, usually one year.
5. A measure of the magnitude of a disease, usually expressed as the number of new cases of a disease per 100,000 individuals in the U.S. population in a one-year period.
