1. Attachment and growth of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, protozoans, viruses, and parasites, on or within the body of a human or animal.

2. An illness or carrier state arising from colonization of foodborne microbial pathogens in the human gastrointestinal tract or other parts of the human body. Human antibodies that resist these pathogens may cause chronic complications.

3. Invasion of the body tissues of a host by an infectious agent, whether or not it causes disease.

4. The invasion and multiplication of disease-causing microorganisms in the body. Infections can occur in any part of the body, and can be localized or systemic.
