1. Swelling caused by the accumulation of lymph and blood cells at the site of infection or injury.

2. A protective tissue response to injury that destroys, dilutes, or walls off both the injurious agent and the injured tissue, characterized by symptoms such as pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function.
