Ion Channel

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-014941

1. Gated, ion-selective glycoproteins that traverse membranes. The stimulus for ion channel gating can be due to a variety of stimuli such as ligands, a transmembrane potential difference, mechanical deformation or through intracellular signaling peptides and proteins.

2. a pore in a cell membrane, formed by an integral protein, that selectively regulates the diffusion of ions into and out of the cell. An ion channel switches between open and closed when the protein undergoes a conformational change. Ion channels are usually selective for a specific ion type (e.g., Na, or K, or Cl, or Ca)
