Leachate

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-015482

1. Liquid (mainly water) that percolates through a landfill and has picked up dissolved, suspended, and/or microbial contaminants from the waste. Leachate can be compared to coffee: water that has percolated down through the ground coffee.

2. A leachate is a contaminated liquid that results when water collects contaminants as it trickles through wastes, agricultural pesticides, or fertilizers. Leaching may occur in farming areas and landfills and may be a means of the entry of hazardous substances into soil, surface water, or ground water.

3. A liquid that results from water collecting contaminants as it trickles through waste material. Leaching may occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills and may result in hazardous substances entering surface water, groundwater, or soil.

4. Water that collects contaminants as it trickles through wastes, pesticides, or fertilizers. Leaching can occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills, and can result in hazardous substances entering surface water, groundwater, or soil.

5. Water that collects contaminants as it trickles through wastes, pesticides or fertilizers. Leaching may occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills, and may result in hazardous substances entering surface water, ground water, or soil.

6. A liquid that results from water collecting contaminants as it trickles through wastes, agricultural pesticides or fertilizers. Leaching may occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills, and may result in hazardous substances entering surface water, ground water, or soil.

7. Any liquid, including any suspended components in the liquid, that has percolated through or drained from waste.

8. Liquid that percolates through waste material in a landfill picking up contaminants from the waste material. Landfill leachate must be collected and properly disposed of to avoid transferring the contaminants to groundwater.

9. A liquid that results from water collecting contaminants as it trickles through wastes, agricultural pesticides or fertilizers. Leachate may occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills, and may result in hazardous substances entering surface water, ground water, or soil.

10. Liquid that has passed through or emerged from solid waste and contains soluble, suspended or miscible materials removed from such wastes. [40 CFR 257.2 (CFR 2013)]

11. Any liquid, including any suspended components in the liquid, that has percolated through or drained from hazardous waste.

12. Water that collects contaminants as it percolates through wastes.

13. Liquids that have percolated through a soil and that contain substances in solution or suspension.
