marginal change

A proportionally very small addition or subtraction to the total quantity or quality of some variable, such as an ecological endpoint or ecosystem service. The benefits and costs of any good or service are determined "at the margin," meaning that the cost and benefit of adding one more unit (the "marginal unit") is used to evaluate efficiency.
