Methyl orange alkalinity

1. A measure of the total alkalinity in a water sample. The alkalinity is measured by the amount of standard sulfuric acid required to lower the pH of the water to a pH level of 4.5, as indicated by the change in color of methyl orange from orange to pink. Methyl orange alkalinity is expressed as milligrams per liter equivalent calcium carbonate.
2. A measure of the total alkalinity in a water sample in which the color of methyl orange reflects the change in level.
