Mineral vein

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-017386

1. A mineral-filled fracture or fault in a rock.

2. Tabular rock or mineral filling of a generally small crack such as a quartz vein. A product of chemical precipitation from a watery solution, in contrast to a dike crystallized from magma, although gradations exist.

3. A zone or belt of mineralized rock lying within boundaries clearly separating it from neighboring rock. It includes all deposits of mineral matter found through a mineralized zone or belt coming from the same source, impressed with the same forms and appearing to have been created by the same processes. A mineralized zone having a more or less regular development in length, width, and depth to give it a tabular form and commonly inclined at a considerable angle to the horizontal. The term lode is commonly used synonymously for vein.

4. A well-defined, tabular, mineralized zone which may or may not have valuable ore bodies.
