1. A fracture in the Earth along which one side has moved in relative to the other. Sudden movements on faults cause earthquakes.

2. A break in the continuity of a body of rock. It is accompanied by a movement on one side of the break or the other so that what were once parts of one continuous rock stratum or vein are now separated.

3. Fracture or zone of fractures in any materials along which strata on one side are displaced with respect to strata on the other side.

4. Fracture or a zone of fractures in any material along which strata on one side have been displaced with respect to that on the other side.

5. Surface or zone of rock fracture along which there has been displacement.
