Fracture
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-011639
1. A break in a rock formation due to structural stresses; e.g. faults, shears, joints, and planes of fracture cleavage.
2. A general term for any break in a rock, whether or not it causes displacement, due to mechanical failure by stress. Fractures include cracks, joints, and faults.
3. A crack or split formed in a rock or bedrock as a result of local erosion or rock stress; they are not due to tectonic actions (which form larger faults and fracture zones).
