Natural Disaster
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018239
1. This term is broadly defined to include disasters and emergencies that may be caused by any natural event. A large emergency event is that one beyond a community’s ability to address within its own and mutual aid resources.
2. Includes earthquakes, extreme heat or cold, floods, hurricanes, landslides, tornados, tsunamis, volcanoes, wild fires, and winter storms. Some emergencies may be further compounded by the emergence of associated ancillary hazards, such as communicable disease outbreaks. Since children and disabled or older adults depend on the assistance of others to survive many emergencies, these groups are more susceptible to the emergency effects.
