Partition Coefficient

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020322

1. A constant symbolizing the ratio of the concentration of a solute in the upper of two phases in equilibrium to its concentration in the lower phase. Chemicals in solution are partitioned into dissolved and particulate adsorbed phase based on their corresponding sediment-to-water partitioning coefficient.

2. A measure of the extent to which a pesticide is divided between the soil and water phases.

3. Measure of the sorption phenomenon, whereby a pesticide is divided between the soil and water phase.
