Persistence

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020663

1. The resistance to degradation as measured by the period of time required for complete decomposition of a material.

2. Refers to the length of time a compound stays in the environment, once introduced. A compound may persist for less than a second or indefinitely.

3. Length of time a compound remains in the environment once introduced.

4. Refers to the length of time a compound stays in the environment, once introduced. A compound may persist for very short amounts of time (e.g., fractions of a second) or for long periods of time (e.g., hundreds of years).

5. Refers to the length of time a compound stays in the environment, once introduced. A compound may persist for very short amounts of time (e.g., fractions of a second) or for long periods of time (e.g., hundreds of years). [EPA 2004]

6. Refers to the length of time a compound stays in the environment, once introduced. A compound may persist for less than a second or indefinitely. [EPA 2005b]

7. The ability of a pathogen to remain in a host or in the environment for extended periods of time. [ILSI 2000]

8. The quality of remaining for a long period of time (such as in the environment or the body). Persistent chemicals (such as DDT and PCBs) are not easily broken down. [NYDOH 1999]

9. Length of time the chemical can exist in the environment before being destroyed (i.e., transformed) by natural processes.

10. The ability of the microorganism to survive in the environment of host.

11. The relative ability of a pesticide to remain active over a period of time.
