Petroleum
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020789
1. Crude oil or any fraction thereof that is liquid under normal conditions of temperature and pressure. The term includes petroleum-based substances comprising a complex blend of hydrocarbons derived from crude oil through the process of separation, conversion, upgrading, and finishing, such as motor fuel, jet oil, lubricants, petroleum solvents, and used oil.
2. Petroleum is defined under CERCLA as "crude oil or any fraction thereof which is not otherwise specifically listed or designated as a hazardous substance under subparagraphs (A) through (F) of this paragraph, and the term does not include natural gas, natural gas liquids, liquefied natural gas, or synthetic gas usable for fuel (or mixtures of natural gas and such synthetic gas)." (40 USC Section 9601). Please note that the Brownfields Law restricts eligibility for EPA brownfields funding to petroleum contaminated properties that EPA or the state determines: (1) are of "relatively low risk" compared with other "petroleum-only" sites in the state; and (2) for which there is no viable responsible party and will be assessed, investigated, or cleaned up by a person that is not potentially liable for cleaning up the site. In addition, petroleum-contaminated properties must not be subject to a corrective action order under a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Section 9003(h) order.
3. A generic term applied to oil and oil products in all forms, such as crude oil, lease condensate, unfinished oils, petroleum products, natural gas plant liquids, and non-hydrocarbon compounds blended into finished petroleum products. See crude oil.
4. A generic term applied to oil and oil products in all forms, such as crude oil, lease condensate, unfinished oils, petroleum products, natural gas plant liquids, and non-hydrocarbon compounds blended into finished petroleum products.
5. For facilities constructed, reconstructed, or modified before May 4, 2011, means crude oil or a fuel derived from crude oil, including, but not limited to, distillate oil, and residual oil. For units constructed, reconstructed, or modified after May 3, 2011, petroleum means crude oil or a fuel derived from crude oil, including, but not limited to, distillate oil, residual oil, and petroleum coke.[40 CFR 60.41a (CFR 2013)].
6. Oil removed from the earth and the oil derived from tar sands and shale.
7. Gasoline or diesel fuel or other fuels normally derived from crude oil. This does not include methane or LPG.
8. Crude oil removed from the earth and the oils derived from tar sands, shale, and coal. [40 CFR 60.101 (CFR 2013)] [40 CFR 60.101a (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 60.111 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 60.111a (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 60. 591 (CFR 2013)] [40 CFR 60. 591a (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 60.691 (CFR 2013)]
9. A general term for all naturally-occurring hydrocarbons, whether gaseous, liquid, or solid.
10. Crude oil or a fuel derived from crude oil, including, but not limited to, distillate and residual oil.
