Playa
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-021270
1. Playas are shallow, short-lived lakes that form where water drains into basins with no outlet to the sea and quickly evaporates. Playas are common features in arid (desert) regions and are among the flattest landforms in the world.
2. Round hollows in the ground in the Southern High Plains of the United States. They are ephemeral, meaning that they are only present at certain times of the year.
3. Generally, a dry or intermittently dry lakebed in the lowest spot of a closed valley. Also, a nearly level area at the bottom of an undrained desert basin, sometimes temporarily covered with water. Salt contents are generally quite high.
