Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007976
An ephemeral, shallow lakebed or salt flat found in an arid or semi-arid basin with internal drainage. Following rainfall, the basin fills with a thin layer of water that subsequently evaporates, leaving behind a flat surface of fine-grained sediment and precipitated minerals. These features are also known as salt pans or sabkhas, and their surfaces are composed of clays, silts, and evaporite deposits like halite and gypsum.
