Process Unit
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-022302
1. Equipment specified in the definitions of process unit or chemical manufacturing process unit in the applicable referencing subpart. If the referencing subpart does not define process unit, then, for the purposes of this part, process unit means the equipment assembled and connected by pipes or ducts to process raw materials and to manufacture an intended product.
2. Definition 1 is a fundamental definition. For other definitions which specify process units in relation to manufacturing a specific product, see the following: 40 CFR 60.561 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 60.591 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 591a (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 60.611 (CFR 2013),40 CFR 60.631 (CFR 2013),40 CFR 63.861 (CFR 2013),40 CFR 63.1001 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1020 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1082 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1101 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 60.661 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1312 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1361 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 98.6(CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1402 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1423 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.2292 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 60.701 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.12005 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 63.1402 (CFR 2013), 40 CFR 60.481 (CFR 2013), and 40 CFR 60.481a (CFR 2013).
3. Any collection of structures and/or equipment, that processes assembles, applies, or otherwise uses material inputs to produce or store an intermediate or final product. A single facility may contain more than one process or production unit.
4. Collection of equipment assembled and connected by hard-piping or duct work, used to process raw materials and to manufacture a product.
5. Components assembled to produce, as intermediate or final products, one or more of the chemicals listed in § 60.489 of this part. A process unit can operate independently if supplied with sufficient feed or raw materials and sufficient storage facilities for the product. [40 CFR 60.481 (CFR 2024)]
6. Equipment assembled and connected by pipes or ducts to produce, as intermediates or final products, one or more of the chemicals in § 60.617a. A process unit can operate independently if supplied with sufficient fuel or raw materials and sufficient product storage facilities.
