1. Refers to waste generated by single- and multi-family homes including old newspapers, clothing, disposable tableware, food packaging, cans and bottles, food scraps, and yard trimmings. Excludes food scraps and yard trimmings that are diverted to backyard (onsite) composting. (U.S. EPA, 1996b)
