Rhizome

1. The underground portion of a plant's stem. Rhizomes are usually thick and horizontal, produce roots and have shoots that develop into new plants.

2. Root-like underground horizontal stem of plants that produces shoots above and roots below. Distinguished from true roots which don't have buds and nodes. Similar to true roots in being underground and thickened by storage deposits.

3. Underground stems, usually horizontally oriented, may be superficially rootlike in appearance but have definite nodes and internodes.

4. The underground portion of a plant's stem, also called a rhizome.
