1. The starchy storage organ of a plant which is a short and thickened subterranean stem or root (e.g. potatoes).
2. A thickened, short, usually subterranean stem having numerous buds called eyes; like a potato.
3. An enlarged underground root or stem of some plants. It is usually rich in carbohydrates. Some, such as potatoes, are important human FOOD. They may reproduce vegetatively from buds.
