Separator

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-025246

1. Formerly a centrifuge device used to remove the fat from milk on the farm, but now used primarily at processing plants.

2. A device used to separate manure into solids and effluent and accomplish by trickling manure over a sloped screen or mechanically forcing through a screen.

3. Waste management unit, generally a tank, used to separate oil or organics from water. A separator consists of not only the separation unit but also the forebay and other separator basins, skimmers, weirs, grit chambers, sludge hoppers, and bar screens that are located directly after the individual drain system and prior to any additional treatment units such as an air flotation unit clarifier or biological treatment unit. Examples of a separator include, but are not limited to, an API separator, parallel-plate interceptor, and corrugated-plate interceptor with the associated ancillary equipment.

4. Device in the wastewater treatment system in which immiscible solvent is physically separated from the water with which it is mixed.

5. Waste management unit, generally a tank, that is used to separate oil or organics from water. Examples of a separator include an API separator, parallel-plate interceptor, and corrugated-plate interceptor with the associated ancillary equipment.

6. Vessel in which streams of multiple phases are gravity separated into individual streams of single phase. [40 CFR 98.238 (CFR 2013)]

7. A mechanical device or gravity settling basin that separates manure into solid and liquid fractions.
