Sludge

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-025758

1. The residue (solids and some water) produced as a result of raw or wastewater treatment.

2. Sludge is a semisolid residue from air or water treatment processes. Residues from treatment of metal wastes and the mixture of waste and soil at the bottom of a waste lagoon are examples of sludge, which can be a hazardous waste.

3. A semi-solid residue from any of a number of air or water treatment processes; can be a hazardous waste.

4. (sluj) The settleable solids separated from water during processing.

5. Gooey solid mixture of bacteria and virus laden organic matter, toxic metals, synthetic organic chemicals, and solid chemicals removed from wastewater at a sewage treatment plant.

6. A solid residue from air or water treatment processes. Can be a hazardous waste.

7. Any solid, semisolid, or liquid waste generated from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control device.

8. Accumulated solids and associated entrained water within a wastewater pretreatment component, generated during the biological, physical, or chemical treatment; coagulation; or clarification of wastewater.

9. Mineral, mud, and slurry too thick to flow. A soft mud, slush, or mire; for example the solid product of a filtration process before drying (filter cake).

10. Any solid, semisolid, or liquid waste generated from a municipal, commercial, or industrial wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility, exclusive of the treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant.

11. Sludge produced by a treatment plant that processes municipal or industrial waste waters.

12. Aggregate of oil or oil and other matter of any kind in any form other than dredged spoil having a combined specific gravity equivalent to or greater than water

13. Accumulated semiliquid suspension of settled solids deposited from wastewaters or other fluids in tanks or basins. It does not include solids or dissolved material in domestic sewage or other significant pollutants in water resources, such as silt, dissolved or suspended solids in industrial wastewater effluents, dissolved materials in irrigation return flows or other common water pollutants.

14. Accumulated semiliquid suspension of settled solids deposited from wastewaters or other fluids in tanks or basins. It does not include solids or dissolved material in domestic sewage or other significant pollutants in water resources, such as silt, dissolved materials in irrigation return flows or other common water pollutants.

15. Accumulated semiliquid suspension of settled solids deposited from wastewaters or other fluids in tanks or basins. It does not include solid or dissolved material in domestic sewage or other significant pollutants in water resources, such as silt, dissolved material in irrigation return flows or other common water pollutants.

16. A semi-solid residue from any of a number of air or water treatment processes; can be a hazardous waste. [EPA 2005b]

17. As defined in § 258.2 of this chapter.
