Sorption
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-026161
1. A general term used to encompass the processes of absorption, adsorption, ion exchange, and chemisorption.
2. Processes that remove solutes from the fluid phase and concentrate them on the solid phase of a medium; used to encompass absorption and adsorption.
3. The adherence of ions or molecules in a gas or liquid to the surface of a solid particle with which they are in contact.
4. A surface phenomenon which may be either absorption or adsorption, or a combination of the two; often used when the specific mechanism is not known.
5. A process in which something is taken up and held.
6. As used in the Superfund Program, sorption refers to technologies that use a sorption agent that attracts, takes up, and holds hazardous waste for removal.
7. The action of soaking up or attracting substances; process used in many pollution control systems.
8. The act of soaking up or attracting substances.
9. Sorption can be defined as the interaction of a contaminant with a solid.
