Streamflow

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-026964

1. Discharge that occurs in a natural channel. Although the term "discharge" can be applied to the flow of a canal, the word "streamflow" uniquely describes the discharge in a surface stream course. The term streamflow is more general than "runoff" as streamflow may be applied to discharge whether or not it is affected by diversion or regulation.

2. The volume of water that moves over a designated point over a fixed period of time. It is often expressed as cubic feet per second (ft3/sec).

3. The water discharge that occurs in a natural channel. A more general term than runoff, streamflow may be applied to discharge whether or not it is affected by diversion or regulation.

4. A type of channel flow, applied to that part of surface runoff in a stream whether or not it is affected by diversion or regulation.
