Target Population

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-027677

1. The population, clients, or subjects intended to be identified and served by the program.

2. Target population denotes the aquatic resource about which information is wanted. Requires a clear, precise definition of the resource. This includes definition of the elements that make up, or are associated with, the target population (i.e., perennial streams and rivers, lakes or estuaries). Usually includes a description of the area of interest or study area (i.e., State, conterminous States of EPA Regions 8, 9, and 10). See What is a Target Population? (http://www.epa.gov/nheerl/arm/surdesignfaqs.htm#whatpopulation).

3. A specific resource set that is the object or target of investigation.

4. The set of all receptors that are potentially at risk. Sometimes referred to as the “population of concern”. A sample population is selected for statistical sampling in order to make inferences regarding the target population.

5. The target population is the entire group a researcher is interested in; the group about which the researcher wishes to draw conclusions. [STEPS 1997]

6. The set of all units that comprise the items of interest in a scientific study, that is, the population about which the decision maker wants to be able to draw conclusions. [EPA 240/R-02/005]

7. The set of all units that comprise the items of interest in a scientific study, that is, the population about which the decision maker wants to be able to draw conclusions.
