Water Pollutant

The term pollutant is defined in CWA section 502(6) and § 122.2. The statute defines pollutant very broadly and includes any type of industrial, municipal, or agricultural waste (including heat) discharged into water. For regulatory purposes, pollutants are grouped into three categories under the NPDES program: conventional, toxic, and nonconventional.. Sewage from vessels and, under certain conditions, water, gas, or other material injected into wells to facilitate production of oil or gas or water derived in association with oil and gas production and disposed of in a well are specifically excluded from the definition of pollutant under the NPDES program.
