XML schema

1. An XML schema describes the structure of an XML document. An XML schema defines the set of rules to which the XML document must conform in order to be considered "valid" according to its schema. An instance of an XML schema is an XML schema document and is a file with the extension .xsd.

2. Description, in XML language or dialect, of the structure and contents of a document or data set. The description includes grammatical rules governing the order of the elements, conditions that the contents must satisfy, data types governing the content of elements and attributes, and other specialized constraints and rules.
