Borrow pit

An excavation site from which earth material, such as soil, sand, or gravel, is extracted for use as fill elsewhere on a construction project. These pits are typically located near the construction site to minimize transportation costs. The material from a borrow pit is used to achieve desired grades or to construct embankments.
