Escape character

A special character in a sequence that alters the interpretation of subsequent characters in a string. It signals that the following character or characters should be treated differently from their literal meaning, often to represent control codes or characters that are otherwise difficult to type. For example, in many programming languages, the backslash (\) serves as an escape character to represent newlines (\n) or tabs (\t).
