Locking shift

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003400

A keyboard mechanism where pressing a key engages a mode that remains active until the key is pressed again, modifying the function of other keys. The most common example is the Caps Lock key, which, when engaged, causes all subsequent alphabetic keystrokes to produce uppercase letters without needing to hold down the Shift key. This contrasts with a non-locking shift key, such as the standard Shift or Ctrl key, which only modifies other keystrokes while it is being physically held down by the user.
