Four-tracking

The practice of equipping a railway mainline with four parallel tracks, allowing for a high volume of traffic and operational flexibility. This configuration permits the separation of trains by speed and direction, for instance, by dedicating one pair of tracks to express passenger services and the other to local or freight trains. The Pennsylvania Railroad's New York to Philadelphia corridor is a well-known example of a four-track mainline.
