An abbreviation for gallons per flush, the unit of measurement for the volume of water a toilet uses to clear its bowl. This rating is a primary indicator of a toilet's water efficiency and is displayed on the fixture and its packaging. Federal standards in the United States, established by the Energy Policy Act of 1992, mandate that new toilets sold must use a maximum of 1.6 gallons per flush.
