A measure of the performance of a motor, pump, or other energy-consuming device, expressed as a percentage of the output power divided by the input power. Higher efficiency indicates that more of the input energy is converted into useful work and less is lost as heat. The U.S. Department of Energy sets minimum efficiency standards for many types of electric motors under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.
