Greenout
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007012
A hazardous flight condition for helicopter pilots where rotor downwash creates a disorienting cloud of vegetation, such as grass, leaves, and other debris, during operations near the ground. This airborne material obscures the pilot's view of the ground and horizon, leading to a loss of visual reference required for stable flight control. The phenomenon is most common when hovering, landing, or taking off over areas with tall grass, crops, or dense jungle canopy, and is analogous to a brownout in dusty conditions.
