The horizontal circumference on a garment pattern or finished piece of clothing that corresponds to the fullest part of the wearer's hips. This measurement is a foundational element for drafting and grading patterns for trousers, skirts, dresses, and coats to achieve a proper fit. For standard women's sizing, the hipline is located approximately 7 to 9 inches (18 to 23 cm) below the natural waistline.
