Holding pattern

A predetermined flight path, usually oval, that an aircraft follows while awaiting further clearance from air traffic control. This maneuver is used to delay an aircraft's arrival at a destination or to sequence traffic. Pilots fly specific entry procedures and maintain designated altitudes and airspeeds within the pattern.
