Kid

A small wooden tub or container, historically used aboard sailing vessels to hold and serve food for a group of sailors known as a mess. These containers were constructed from staves and hoops, similar to a small barrel, and were part of the standard issue for enlisted personnel. The term also describes the box on a fife rail where halyards are coiled and stowed.
