Lay
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003277
The precise positioning of a sheet of paper against guides on a printing press before the impression is made. The front lay (or gripper edge) and side lay are mechanical stops that register each sheet in the exact same location relative to the printing plate. This consistent alignment is required for accurate color registration and for printing correctly on the reverse side of the sheet (backing up).
