Long and short stitch

A hand embroidery technique that creates a shaded or blended effect by using stitches of varying lengths. These stitches are worked closely together, with the end of one stitch overlapping the beginning of the next, to fill an area. This method is frequently employed for realistic depictions of natural subjects like flowers or animals.
