A measurement of distance, specifically the angular distance between the moon and another celestial body, used in celestial navigation to determine longitude at sea. The navigator measures the angle with a sextant and notes the precise time, then uses a nautical almanac to calculate the vessel's position. This method, known as the lunar distance method, was prevalent before the invention of accurate marine chronometers in the 18th century.
