Lunar distance

The angular separation between the Moon and another celestial object, such as the Sun or a specific star. The method of lunar distances was a technique used in celestial navigation to determine longitude at sea before the invention of accurate marine chronometers. By measuring the angle and consulting pre-calculated tables in a nautical almanac, a navigator could find Greenwich Mean Time and thus calculate their longitude.
