MARPOL

The principal international agreement for preventing pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes. The treaty, whose name is an abbreviation for Marine Pollution, sets standards for vessel construction, equipment, and operation to minimize contamination. Its regulations are detailed in six technical annexes, each addressing a different category of pollutant, including oil, noxious liquids, garbage, and air emissions.
