Maroon

To abandon a person on a deserted island or remote shore with little chance of rescue, a punishment inflicted by pirates and mutinous crews in the 17th and 18th centuries. The victim was usually left with a little food and water and sometimes a loaded pistol. The word itself comes from the Spanish cimarron, meaning wild or runaway, first applied to fugitive slaves.
