Buccaneer
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000811
A type of small, fast sailing vessel, often a sloop or schooner, historically associated with privateering and piracy in the Caribbean during the 17th and 18th centuries. These ships were characterized by their shallow draft, which allowed them to navigate coastal waters and hide in coves, and a design that prioritized speed and maneuverability over cargo capacity. A typical buccaneer vessel was armed with a small number of cannons and carried a large crew for boarding actions.
