Tartan

A small Mediterranean sailing vessel with one mast and a lateen sail, employed in fishing and local trade between the 1500s and the end of the 1800s. The name is also spelled tartane, and the type was common along the French, Spanish, and Italian coasts. Its lateen rig, a triangular sail on a long slanted yard, distinguishes it from the square-rigged brig and snow.
