MARPOL 73/78

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003539

The combined international treaty that regulates pollution from ships, merging an original 1973 convention with a modifying 1978 protocol. This instrument was created because the 1973 convention was slow to be ratified, so the 1978 protocol absorbed it while introducing stricter rules, particularly for oil tankers. The combined convention entered into force in 1983 and is the version currently enforced by signatory maritime nations.
